The duo, KhoMashu’s ‘Gold’ Mthembu and KhoMashu’s Thobani ‘Cue’ Mgobhozi, released their anticipated debut album ‘Gqom Is The Future’ on Friday and had people on social media in a frenzy.

Born in the municipalities of Durban, Gqom (a zulu word meaning “hit” or “drum”) is a subgenre of Afro House recognizable by its reductionist techniques, dark strings, syncopated breccias and repetitive vocal samples.

DJ Duo Cue and Gold better known by his stage name, Distruction Boyz – were two of the most daring pioneers of the genre (remember Babes Wodumo’s “Wololo”?), But through Gqom is the future, they evolve further. Cuned sgubhu by KwaZulu-Natal beatmakers, Distruction Boyz ‘shows a softer and melodic side to the gqom.
